In the last few days, everything several Romanians have problems entering Mexico. In the context of multiple reports in recent days regarding the refusal of several Romanian citizens traveling to the United States to travel for tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued diplomatic efforts with the Mexican authorities.

During today, the MFA leadership had a video conference call with the Ambassador of the United Mexican States in Bucharest, HE Mr. José Guillermo Ordorica Robles.

During the dialogue, the Romanian side expressed concern and dissatisfaction with the situations generated by the decisions of the Mexican authorities regarding the access of Romanian tourists to Mexico and the treatment to which Romanian citizens are subjected upon entering the territory of this state.

The Romanian authorities do not challenge the sovereign right of the United Mexican States regarding the decision to grant the right of entry into their territory, but it is mandatory that these decisions are not arbitrary, but taken on the basis of individual assessments, on a case-by-case basis. generate offensive situations.

At the same time, the Romanian side requested the Mexican side to ensure a transparent and predictable approach to the regime of foreign tourists in Mexico, especially in the current pandemic context, otherwise there is a risk that such cases will induce the idea of ​​a discriminatory approach.

About 50 Romanian citizens are stranded at Cancun airport

At the same time, regarding the approximately 50 Romanian citizens who are still at the airport in Cancun awaiting return flights, the MFA states that a team appointed by the Honorary Consul of Romania in Cancun went to the airport to provide food and water for Romanian citizens. These were taken over by airport officials and will be distributed to Romanian citizens.

At the same time, the MFA emphasizes the importance of thorough information prior to travel abroad, including by consulting the information available on the MFA website in the sections Travel advice and alerts and Travel Warnings in the context of COVID-19.

In this context, the MFA recalls that, according to information publicly communicated by the Mexican authorities and available on the MFA website, at Travel Warnings in the context COVID-19, given the measures taken to manage the pandemic, at the International Airport of Mexico City is allowed to enter people who prove, with supporting documents, that they are making an essential trip, tourism is not included in this category.

Persons who cannot demonstrate the essential nature of the journey are rejected at the border and returned to their state of residence / residence with the first available flight.

Regarding Cancun International Airport, the Mexican border authorities have instituted much stricter controls, as the tourist area of ​​Riviera Maya (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, etc.) has been classified as an orange area of ​​epidemiological risk.

The MFA also reiterates the recommendation addressed to Romanian citizens to exercise caution regarding the decision to travel for tourism during this period, especially in the case of destinations that are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The MFA recalls, in this context, that the areas of Mexico City and Cancun are classified as areas with high epidemiological risk in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic (Mexico City is considered a red zone and Cancun, an orange zone).
