The British government has taken an urgent decision to ban travel to the UK from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Burundi and Rwanda to prevent the spread of the new variant initially identified in South Africa.

As of Friday, January 29, at 13:00, passengers who have transited the United Arab Emirates, Burundi and Rwanda in the last 10 days will no longer have access to the United Kingdom.

Exceptions to this measure are British, Irish and third-country nationals with the right to reside in the UK, but are required to isolate themselves at home for 10 days with everyone in the household. They will not be able to leave the quarantine earlier than the deadline.

There will also be a flight ban for direct passenger flights in the United Arab Emirates.

The decision to ban travel to these destinations comes after the discovery of a new variant of coronavirus in the UK, which was first identified in South Africa and spread to other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Burundi and Rwanda.
