The Nigerian government has lifted the flight ban for Lufthansa, Air France and KLM. Thus, the 3 European airlines will resume their operations to destinations in West Africa.

European airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have received approval from the Nigerian Federal Aviation Ministry to resume international operations in the country as of November 17, 2020.

Air France, KLM and Lufthansa resume flights to Nigeria

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was the first EU operator to resume flights. As of November 24, there are 3 flights a week from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) to Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS). KLM plans to increase the frequency of flights to 5 flights per week, starting with December 10, 2020.

Air France will resume the weekly flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Lagos on December 7, 2020. The French airline aims to increase the frequency to 4 flights per week until December 9.

The German operator Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) will resume the 5 weekly flights from Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA), from December 17, 2020.

Nigeria will reopen 3 more airports.

Hadi Sirika, Minister of Aviation, confirmed that the Ministry of Health, as well as the Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID) and the Presidential Task Force of Nigeria are considering the reopening of Kano (KAN), Port Harcourt (PHC) and Enugu (ENU) airports before end of the year. At the same time, Nigeria could reopen all international airports before the end of 2021.

Nigeria suspended all international flights in September 2020, after the EU imposed strict visa policies on Nigerian travelers traveling to European Union countries.

Virginie Battu-Henriksson, EU spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, explained that the decision was made in response to the fact that the Nigerian authorities had not fulfilled their role in repatriating Nigerian citizens living illegally in Europe.

Nigeria also blacklisted Emirates Airlines for travel restrictions imposed on citizens arriving from Nigeria in March 2020. However, the Nigerian government overturned its decision on September 30, after the UAE reduced measures in July.
