Each trip a person makes increases the chance of causing more infections or transporting new variants of coronavirus to the Netherlands. For this reason, the government has issued a strict travel permit for Dutch people: do not travel abroad and do not book any travel abroad until March 31, 2021 inclusive.

The Netherlands applies additional travel restrictions

The Dutch government is introducing additional measures to prevent the import of new strains of the virus through travel, trying to restrict travel abroad and domestically.

There are currently bans on flights and ferries arriving from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. A flight ban is also in force for passenger flights arriving from the following third countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Africa South, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The flight ban will remain in force for one month or as long as the legislation on mandatory quarantine rules for passengers is in force.

In addition, all passengers traveling to the Netherlands by air or sea in high-risk areas must test negative for a rapid COVID-19 test performed shortly before departure. The test must not have been performed more than four hours before boarding the aircraft or ship.

This requirement is in addition to the obligation to submit a negative PCR test performed no later than 72 hours before arrival in the Netherlands. These measures also apply to persons traveling to the Caribbean parts of the Netherlands. Furthermore, travelers must self-quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in the Netherlands. After five days they can be tested. If the result of this PCR test is negative, they can come out of self-isolation.

As rapid test facilities are not available near all ports and airports, the government expects the double test requirement to reduce the number of trips to the Netherlands. As a result, it can be difficult for travelers to get home.

Dutch citizens who have an urgent reason to travel to the Netherlands and cannot present a negative PCR test and a negative test result should contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For travelers arriving from non-EU countries, a travel ban has been in force since March 2020. As a result, business travelers, students, highly qualified expatriates, professionals in the cultural and non-business sectors can no longer travel to the Netherlands. creative people and long-distance people who want to travel to the Netherlands for a short period of time.

It is possible that the new measures will also be applied to European countries. These measures will enter into force on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at 00.01.

Because of these restrictions, KLM will cancel all long-haul flights to / from the Netherlands, from January 22, 2021.
