RYANAIR, one of the largest low-cost airlines in Europe, has accused EU governments of unfair aid to domestic airlines. Obviously, among the accused states is Germany, which offered financial support of 9 billion EURO to Lufthansa.

RYANAIR and Laudamotion are closing their Dusseldorf base.

But RYANAIR is not only charging these state aids, but also the increased taxes by the airport authorities. On 10 September, RYANAIR announced that it was closing its base in Dusseldorf following a failed negotiation on fees imposed by airport authorities.

The company that manages the Dusseldorf airport does not want to reduce taxes, but even increased them during the COVID-19 pandemic and offered subsidies to German companies. RYANAIR stated that it could no longer operate in Dusseldorf under these conditions and announced the closure of the base from 24 October 2020. Laudamotion, a subsidiary of RYANAIR, also announced that it was withdrawing its 7 aircraft from its Dusseldorf base for the same reasons. Hundreds of employees, pilots and handling staff will lose their jobs.

With the closure of the Dusseldorf base, Laudamotiona withdraws from the German market. However, it leaves room for negotiations for 2021.

Eurowings takes over 95% of RYANAIR flights from Dusseldorf.

Taking advantage of these opportunities and routes abandoned by RYANAIR and Laudamotion, Eurowings announces the takeover of 95% of these flights. Eurowings has decided to expand its operations from Düsseldorf to Mallorca, Ibiza, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Malaga, Alicante and Faro.

Eurowings will also increase the number of flights to the Greek destinations Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu and Kos, starting on 24 October. Thus, for those in the Dusseldorf area, Eurowings will provide flights to 80 European destinations.

Jens Bischof, CEO and spokesman for Eurowings' board of directors, announces that the era of "ultra low-cost carrier" (ULCC) companies has passed in Germany. In these turbulent times, passengers are no longer looking for 5 EURO tickets, but are looking for airlines to have confidence, stability and flight safety.
