Boeing and Southwest Airlines announced today the placement of a new order for 100 optional 737 MAX plus 155 aircraft. One of the largest airlines in the world, which has an all-Boeing fleet of more than 730 aircraft, wants to modernize its future fleet with 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
The new order increases Southwest Airlines' commitment to more than 600 737 MAX aircraft, which could be delivered by 2031. Thus, the new 737 MAX 7 aircraft could replace the current 737-700 aircraft with transport capacities ranging from 140-150 seats. The 737 MAX 8 aircraft could replace the current 737-800, which has 175 seats.
The new purchase agreement brings Southwest Airlines' order numbers to 200 x 737-7 and 180 x 737-8, of which more than 30 have already been delivered. Southwest Airlines will also have 270 options for either model, with a direct purchase commitment from the carrier for more than 600 aircraft. The airline is also planning additional 737 MAX aircraft through leasing companies.
The new 737 MAX family of aircraft will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by at least 14% compared to the aircraft they will replace, helping to improve operating costs and environmental performance.
In addition to aircraft, Southwest will expand the use of Boeing digital solutions: Airplane Health Management, Maintenance Performance Toolbox and digital navigation tools. Boeing will also provide software upgrades and new equipment that allow wireless communication to support Southwest operations
