The United States and the United Kingdom have signed a new "Open Skies" agreement, as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.

The agreement, which involves the United States, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, was agreed in principle in November 2018. But on 17 November 2020, the two governments confirmed the signing of the new Open Skies agreement.

The agreement will enter into force on January 1, 2021

The agreement was signed by Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, and Grant Shapps, the UK Minister for Transport. It will enter into force on January 1, 2021.

The new treaty will facilitate a smooth transition for international air transport, for passengers and airlines, but also for other parties involved.

The agreement meets all the criteria of the US Open Skies policy and provides additional traffic rights for US-based airlines operating cargo operations.

In 2018, the United Kingdom estimated trade between the two countries at 50 billion pounds (66,3 billion dollars). These estimates also include revenues from passenger air transport.
