La Palma Airport in Santa Cruz, Spain on the Canary Islands, was closed for several hours on September 19 after an eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. It was the first eruption in the last 50 years in the Canary Islands.

Initially, two Binter Canarias ATR 72-600 aircraft were diverted to Tenerife North. Spain's air navigation manager, Enaire, has issued a recommendation as a precautionary measure - that no flights go to the island of La Palma.

Traffic resumed at Santa Cruz de La Palma Airport a few hours later.

The next scheduled flight to La Palma was a TUIfly Belgium. The Boeing 737-800 (OO-JEF) had taken off from Amsterdam and was operating flight OR567. After flying in different directions, the pilots finally decided to land in Santa Cruz, despite Enaire's recommendation. After an hour on the ground, the TUI flight took off again to Tenerife South and Amsterdam.
