The new travel conditions in Austria, applied from July 27, 2020. See the main changes!

On 24 July 2020, the Austrian authorities issued a new Ordinance reviewing the conditions of entry and transit into the Republic of Austria. The new conditions are imposed on those coming from states for which there are travel alerts, including Romania, valid until September 30, 2020.

The isolation period is 10 days

The main changes compared to previous measures are the reduction of the validity period of the biological-molecular test for SARS-CoV-2 from 4 days to 72 hours and reducing the period of isolation at home or in an appropriate location, from 14 days to 10 days.

The negative test for SARS-CoV-2, not older than 72 hours

According to the new provisions, starting with July 27, 2020, at 00:00, the access of Romanian citizens and EU member states coming from Romania to the Republic of Austria is allowed if they have a negative molecular test for SARS-CoV-2, not older than 72 hours, attested by a certificate in German or English.

In his absence, those persons and those with whom they live together are required to undergo isolation at home for 10 days or in an appropriate location, immediately after entering the Republic of Austria, the costs of which must be borne by the person concerned.

If a molecular biological test for SARS-CoV-2 performed during the isolation period is negative, the isolation instituted during the 10 days is suspended.

If the foreign national is unable to present the medical certificate or proof of adequate accommodation, the Austrian authorities will not allow entry into the territory of the Republic of Austria. 

The new provisions apply also to Romanian tourists.

For third-country nationals (non-EU), who come from Romania, entry is allowed only with molecular biological test for SARS-CoV-2 negative and are required to enter solitary confinement at home or in a suitable location for 10 days, at their own expense. If they cannot prove the existence of adequate housing for isolation, they are denied accessl.

People from the following countries: Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, San Marino, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Vatican, Great Britain, Cyprus, may enter Austria freely if they present a document certifying the right of residence / residence in Austria or in the said States and prove that they have not traveled outside Austria or those States in the last 10 days.

Transit is allowed on a permanent basis

Transit is allowed on a permanent basis, without stopping, for citizens who come from Romania and who go to destinations in other states.. Local authorities may require the production of supporting documents to ensure entry into the country of destination: domicile / residence / right of residence / employment contract / any other proof of the need to enter, for example a certificate of necessary medical treatment, studies, and the completion of a transit declaration, which is below.

Recommendations for Romanian citizens traveling between Romania and Austria

  • By road: It is recommended to purchase a sticker proving the payment of the motorway toll before entering Austria or from the first refueling station (immediately after crossing the border). As indicated on the back, the sticker must be affixed to the windshield. Otherwise, fines will be imposed.
  • By rail:  We recommend regular consultation of the websites of the railway companies from the two countries. The same rules and exceptions apply as for road transport.  
  • By air: The direct flights Romania-Austria are suspended between 16-31.07.2020.
