Airlines are becoming increasingly interested in social networks and direct interaction with passengers. Last week, British charter airline operator Thomson Airways launched a twitter contest to find out the name of the first Boeing 787 to enter the Thomson fleet.

To promote the competition, Thomson Airways collared a Boeing 737-800 with the hastag #nameourplane. Those wishing to participate in the competition must publish a photo of the aircraft or mention the location where they saw the hastag and the proposed name for 787. The winner will have the honor of taking a tour of the Boeing 787 and even taking part in the inaugural flight. It will be chosen by a jury of Thomson, Boeing officials and a pilot from 787!

Thomson Airways is the first airline to fly an aircraft through the social networking site Twitter. It will be the first British airline to be in possession of one Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

The British operator has ordered 13 Boeing 787 units and can supplement with another 13. It will operate 787 aircraft, from 1 to 2013, from 4 UK bases: Manchester, London Gatwick, Glasgow and the East Midlands.
