Air passenger transport increased in 2022 by 87,6%, compared to the previous year, with 20.971.800 passengers registered, compared to 11.176.800 passengers in 2021, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics, cited by Agerpres.

Association of Romanian Airports reported 21.015.948 passengers that transited Romanian airports. Maybe AAR and INS should sit around a table and agree on the number of passengers who traveled by air from/to Romania.

Beyond that, passenger numbers are still below their pre-pandemic peak in 2019. But growth in 2022 has been spectacular, surpassing even the most optimistic scenarios.

The airports in Bucharest (12589200 passengers), Cluj (2645000 passengers) and Iași (1539000 passengers) were the busiest airports in Romania. The number of passengers embarked was approximately equal to that of passengers disembarked.

According to INS, in terms of boardings, most frequent flight passengers boarded for London Luton – 857.602 passengers, Milan Bergamo - 505.191, Vienna - 317.634, Munich – 313.603 passengers, Madrid Barajas - 282.298, Istanbul International - 274.947, Brussels Charleroi – 264.856 passengers, Tel Aviv - 242.594, Amsterdam Schiphol -230.260 and Barcelona – 229.780 passengers.

By destination country, most frequent flyers boarded for Italy – 1.738.734 passengers, UK – 1.616.777 passengers, Germany – 1.117.018 passengers, Spania – 914.855 passengers, France – 565.774 passengers, Turkey – 384.076 passengers, Lower Countries – 336.742 passengers, Austria – 317.634 passengers.
