Official, Hungary will ban foreigners from entering the country from 1 September 2020. The measure is taken against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even Romanians will suffer after this decision.

In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, had a discussion with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, in order to clarify the situation of the Romanians in relation to the new decision taken by Hungary.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu asked the interlocutor for information on the exact content of the targeted measures, insisting on taking into account their impact on Romanian citizens transiting Hungary, as well as on Romanian citizens - cross-border workers.

During the discussion, confirmation was obtained from Minister Péter Szijjártó that the transit of Romanian citizens through Hungary, respectively the access of Romanian citizens - cross-border workers will not be affected.

Thus, according to the Hungarian official, transit through Hungarian territory will continue to be permitted under the same conditions and through the same border crossing points and on the same road lanes established. He showed that the rules expected to be changed concern entry into Hungary as the final destination of the trip.

The MFA recalls that the following transit conditions for passengers are currently applicable:

  • the duration of the transit should not exceed 24 hours;
  • people do not show symptoms specific to COVID-19 infection;
  • to present a document from which should unequivocally result the purpose of the trip and the country of destination, respectively to have secured the entry on the territory of the neighboring state of Hungary, located on the transit route to the country of destination.

He also suggested that the relevant police authorities in the two states maintain close contact in the near future for possible technical clarifications.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps the situation in mind and will inform promptly on any developments of interest. Further details will be provided after the formal adoption of the decisions of the Hungarian authorities.
