The PX73 Niugini flight, off the Pohnpei - Chuuk - Port Moresby route, took off according to the schedule from Pohnpei Airport to Chuuk, with the final destination being Port Moresby. A Boeing 737-800 Air Niugini landed in the water
According to local media and witnesses, the plane went down the right path until it hit the surface of the water and stopped at the bay, approximately 300 m from the runway threshold. At this point, it is still unclear whether the aircraft exceeded the runway end or sank in the lagoon before reaching the runway. But according to the image below, the plane was more likely to approach the normal landing line.
The plane managed to stay afloat for a long time, allowing passengers to evacuate through the emergency exits and through the front door. However, over time the aircraft sank further. All 36 passengers and 11 crew members managed to escape. They were transported to the shore with the help of boats.
At the time of the accident, there was a storm associated with low visibility and heavy rain. The weather deteriorated rapidly during the landing process.
There is an ongoing investigation, and some information is contradictory. We will come back with information!
