Virgin Atlantic on SkyTeam

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) will join forces in a joint venture. Moreover, Delta will invest over 360 millions of dollars in the British carrier and take over the 49% stake in the shares. And here's how Virgin Atlantic is getting closer to the SkyTeam alliance.

Richard Branson is recognized as a reluctant type of airline alliance and has long avoided joining one of the 3 groups. He could have signed with Star Alliance, too, because Singapore Airlines owned 49% of the shares, still from 2000. But the current economic situation has made him change his mind, recently indicating that this may become a matter of survival.

I think it will be a matter of time until Virgin Atlantic joins SkyTeam and that's because Delta is a founding member of the alliance. According to the new agreement, passengers of the two airlines will be able to collect loyalty points, have access to Delta Sky Club and Virgin Atlantic Clubhous lounges, will be able to enjoy the benefits of the alliance.

It remains to be seen how things will evolve, but I think Virgin Atlantic will be on SkyTeam with full rights, from 2014!
