During 3 years of AirlinesTravel, I had the opportunity and pleasure to participate in many wine tastings. Each tasting is unique in its own way because the wines are unique too. Everything takes place within a story frame because each wine has its own story. The wine should be consumed in a special ritual and in moderation, along with carefully chosen culinary preparations.
On July 19, 2015, KLM organized a slightly different wine tasting. I didn't participate in it, but I really like the idea because aviation gives the sensation and the flight gives us wings. The passengers of flight KL605, who traveled on Sunday, July 19, on the Amsterdam - San Francisco route to World Business class, were able to participate in a unique wine tasting, held at an altitude of 10.000 meters.
The tasting was organized under the guidance of oenologist Therese Boer and included testing of three white wines and three red wines. The first two rankings will be served on KLM aircraft starting this fall.
It is the first tasting in KLM history on an intercontinental route.
The passengers in the World Business Class tasted six types of wine, before and after takeoff, to determine if there is a difference between the taste of wine on the ground and in the air. Indeed, the taste and smell diminish with 20% in the air, due to the low pressure and humidity. For this reason, the meals served on board the KLM are more spicy and the wines carefully selected. The wines with a high tannin content have a more unpleasant taste at high altitude and therefore are not included in the KLM wine selection.
Of the six types of wine, the first two most popular were chosen to be served on the KLM in the fall. These are The Holy Snail Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (France) and Casa Silva Cool Coast Pinot Noir 2013 (Chile) wines.
