Wizz Air has announced a base in Cardiff and 9 new routes for 2021.

Wizz Air UK, the UK-registered subsidiary of Wizz Air, announced today setting up a new base at Cardiff Airport. It will be the fourth Wizz Air base in the UK, after those in London Luton, Gatwick and Doncaster Sheffield.

An Airbus A321 Wizz Air plane will be allocated to Cardiff and 9 new routes will be launched, mainly to holiday destinations.

Wizz Air will open routes for the first time to the Cardiff area, providing connections to sunny destinations such as: Alicante, Faro, Larnaca and Tenerife. But also seasonal routes: summer to Corfu, Heraklion and Palma de Mallorca; winter to Lanzarote and Sharm El Sheikh. As Wizz Air's first foray into Wales, the new base is a significant investment in Cardiff Airport and the local region by creating over 40 direct and over 250 indirect jobs supporting industries such as aviation, transport, hospitality and tourism. .

Connecting Wales with nine popular holiday destinations will boost the local economy by increasing Cardiff Airport's annual capacity by over 350.000 seats, giving local passengers even more accessible and exciting travel opportunities at their doorstep.

This announcement follows a period of recent expansion for the airline, with Wizz Air UK opening new bases at Gatwick and Doncaster Sheffield airports in October and adding an eleventh aircraft to its London Luton base in July.

With the allocation of this aircraft to the Cardiff base, the Wizz Air UK fleet will increase to 14 aircraft, and the addition of these new routes from Cardiff Airport means that Wizz Air / WIZZ Air UK operates 132 routes from 11 airports in the UK.
