Wizz Air has obtained approval to allow its subsidiary in Malta to start flying from 27 September 2022. The new subsidiary comes to complete the Wizz Air network alongside its subsidiary in the UK and Abu Dhabi.

The new Wizz Air subsidiary will start serving Rome from Malta after obtaining an air operator certificate (AOC) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and an operating license from the Malta Civil Aviation Directorate.

The establishment of Wizz Air Malta will allow the group to further diversify its operations, offering increased flexibility and potential for "significant" expansion, according to the airline.

Wizz Air Chairman Robert Careya said: “We are delighted to announce the establishment of Wizz Air Malta, which will provide opportunities to further diversify our operations and drive growth. Malta's economic and regulatory regime will enable Wizz Air to strengthen its position in the global market.”

Malta's Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia said: “We expect Wizz Air Malta to register a substantial number of aircraft in our country. Malta will continue to support investors who choose Malta as a jurisdiction for the benefit of this very important industry and ultimately for the strength of our economy.”

Wizz Air Malta will initially have an Airbus A321neo with 239 seats. Operations will begin in October 2022. Initially, it will fly from Malta to Italy, with other routes to be announced in the near future.
