In the midst of the economic crisis, several airports have started to increase airport taxes. Last year, in full summer season, Spain has increased airport taxes overnight.

The example was followed by The Italian Aeronautical Authority which increased the taxes at Rome Fiumicino airport. Immediately after the increase, several airlines stopped operating at this airport. One of the carriers is Wizz Air, which is announcing its intention to move several flights from Fiumicino to Ciampino. From May 7, 4 of the 8 routes operated to Rome will be moved to Ciampino.

Thus, flights to Gdansk from Poland and Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures from Romania will be operated on Rome Ciampino. Daniel de Carvalho, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said that the low-cost operator offers customers flights at very good rates, and this is also possible due to the low taxes charged by airports.

Daniel de Carvalho also stated that the taxes on Fiumicino have increased a lot and unjustifiably. Authorities are doing nothing to encourage tourism, to protect jobs. One airport loses, another wins. Despite these problems, Wizz Air will continue to operate flights from Fiumicino to Prague, Sofia, Vilnius and Warsaw.

From May 7, those who will travel from Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures to Rome will land on Ciampino. For the time being, airfare remains unchanged.
