Wizz Air, the fastest growing and most sustainable ultra-low-cost airline in Europe, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus to explore the potential of hydrogen-powered aircraft operations.

The collaboration assumes that Wizz Air will explore the possibility of efficient and ultra-low-cost hydrogen-based operations. This agreement will give Wizz Air a better understanding of how the operation of zero-emission hydrogen-powered aircraft can have a positive impact on the airline's future business model.

The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding is to identify the operational and infrastructure opportunities and challenges of hydrogen powered aircraft. Both sides will work together to develop a better understanding of:

  • the evolution of the global hydrogen ecosystem, from the perspective of society, the regulations in the field, the price of energy and the infrastructure for hydrogen;
  • the impact of hydrogen aircraft for Wizz Air's fleet, operations and infrastructure, including its network, schedule, bases and airports, taking into account the specific characteristics of the aircraft, such as achievable flight range and time to refuel.

This Airbus Memorandum of Understanding is based on Wizz Air's position as the most environmentally friendly choice for air travel and Fly the Greenest's sustainability campaign, which urges passengers to make the right choice when deciding to travel. by air.

The campaign helps raise awareness of WIZZ's operation of one of the world's newest and most efficient fleets. WIZZ operates with the lowest CO emissions2 per passenger-kilometer of all competing airlines and, if each airline were as efficient as Wizz Air, European CO2 of aviation would be reduced by 34%.

In November 2021, Wizz Air signed an agreement with Airbus to purchase another 102 A321 aircraft, including 75 A321neo aircraft and 27 Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The order received a clear agreement from the shareholders at a special meeting of shareholders held on February 22, 2022.

With the new order, Wizz Air's delivery stock includes a firm order for 34 A320neo aircraft, 240 A321neo aircraft and 47 A321XLR aircraft, plus the additional order for 15 A321neo and purchase rights for 75 A321neo. These represent a total of 411 aircraft.
