Flights were suspended until 15:00 BST today (17:00 Romanian time) after the fire in the multi-storey car park caused the building to suffer "significant structural collapse".

Images shared online show huge flames and smoke from the top floor of the building after the fire broke out shortly before 21pm on Tuesday. Fifteen fire engines intervened to extinguish the fire. Four firefighters and one airport staff member were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Up to 1.200 vehicles are estimated to have been parked and later damaged, an emergency response official said. Hundreds of people were left stranded in Luton, with many saying their cars were parked.

Many passengers crowded Luton Airport station with their luggage in an attempt to catch a train or coach to other airports to catch onward flights.

London Luton Airport is the fifth largest airport in the UK after Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted, carrying over 13 million passengers in 2022.
