Airbus hopes to have the CFM International LEAP-321A-powered A1XLR certified by the end of 2023. Airbus Executive Vice President Philippe Mhun told FlightGlobal that Airbus and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have an agreement on the technical specifications of the aircraft type, including the central rear tank, which has been at the center of discussions between Airbus and regulators.

Currently, three A321XLRs are participating in the certification program, powered by both CFM International LEAP-1A and Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine variants. Mhun said the LEAP-321A-powered A1XLR will be certified first, with the PW321G-powered A1100XLR to be certified later. First deliveries are scheduled for Q2 2024.

The center tank, which is an addition to the A321XLR, has been a point of contention between the manufacturer and regulators. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has expressed concern about the durability and safety of a fuel tank located in the rear of the aircraft, which is also under the cabin.
