On April 1, 1921, French pilot Adrienne Bollard took off from Mendoza, Argentina, in a Cauldron biplane to become the first woman to fly over the Andes. She completed this historic flight to the capital, Chile, Santiago, in about 10 hours.

On April 1, 1956, TWA Flight 400, a 4-0-4 Martin plane, crashed at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, killing 22 of the 36 people on board the aircraft.

Venezuelan airline VIASA has started operations.

On April 1, 1961, the Venezuelan airline VIASA began operations. Venezuelan Internacional de Aviación Sociedad Anónima, or VIASA for short, was the Venezuelan national airline between 1960 and 1997. It was based in Torre Viasa in Caracas. Launched in November 1960, it was nationalized in 1975 due to financial problems and re-privatized in 1991, the majority shareholder being Iberia. The company ceased operations in January 1997 and went into liquidation.

The first two Lufthansa Airbus A300Bs entered operational service.

On April 1, 1976, Lufthansa's first two Airbus A300B aircraft entered operational service. The two operated flights between Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and London.

Southwest Airlines Flight 812 landed urgently due to a hole in the fuselage of the aircraft.

On April 1, 2011, Southwest Airlines Flight 812, a Boeing 737-3HR N632SW aircraft with 123 people on board, suffered a flight failure, which opened a 1.8-meter-long hole in the aircraft's fuselage and triggered decompression of the cabin. Two people were slightly injured, and the plane made an emergency landing at Yuma International Airport in Arizona. Subsequently, Southwest Airlines decided to detain all 80 Boeing 737-300 aircraft for inspection.
