Catania Airport, closed due to a major fire!

Flights to/from the airport in Catania, Sicily are suspended until Wednesday. Due to a major fire, which took place on the night of Sunday to Monday, the Vincenzo Bellini International Airport of Catania was closed. Although the fire was extinguished in a few hours, the departure terminal remains affected by smoke and the water used to extinguish the fire.

Initially, the airport was scheduled to remain closed until Monday morning, but following detailed checks, the deadline was extended until July 19, 2023 at 14:00. Some flights destined for Catania will be redirected to other airports on the Island of Sicily, such as Palermo, Trapani or Comiso.

Comiso Airport is a two-hour drive from Catania Airport; both are in the east of the island. While Palermo and Trapani are in the west of the island, so four to five hours by car from Catania.

Airlines have notified passengers affected by canceled flights or those whose operational schedule has been changed, including those whose destination has changed. It is important that passengers who had flights from / to Catania during this period check their status with the air operators.

More than 120 passengers are expected to be affected by canceled, changed flights!
