Starting from January 18, 2024, the airport in Chisinau will use the abbreviation RMO - meaning the Republic of Moldova - instead of the current name, KIV, which dates back to the Soviet era, Minister Andrei Spînu said, according to Reuters, taken by News.ro.

The abbreviation KIV was used as an approximation of the name of the Moldovan capital in Russian (Kishinev), which was replaced in the post-Soviet era by Chişinău, the name in Romanian.

"Changing an abbreviation is a rather lengthy procedure and has been going on for almost a year", Spînu declared for ProTV Chisinau.

"I think we will quickly get used to the new abbreviation that signifies the name of our country", he declared for ProTV Chisinau.
