Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that Japan was visited by more than 3 million foreign tourists in March 2024. To be exact, there were 3.081.600 tourists.

The increase is approximately 69,5% compared to March 2023 and 11,6% compared to March 2019, the reference period before the Covid pandemic, notes AFP.

The most foreign tourists who visited Japan in March 2024 were from South Korea (663.100 visitors), followed by Taiwan with 484.400 visitors (up 20,4%), China with 452.400 tourists ( down 34,6%), the US with 201.000 visitors (up 64,3%) and Hong. Kong with 231.400 visitors (up 35,0%).

It is the first time in history that the threshold of three million foreign visitors is exceeded in a single month in Japan, JNTO said.

In addition to the strong return of world tourism after the pandemic years, periods of Japanese cherry blossoms and Easter holidays abroad also contributed to this record level of tourism in Japan. Added to this is the weak level of the yen in relation to the dollar and the euro, which makes Japan a cheaper destination for Americans and Europeans.

The monthly number of foreign visitors to Japan exceeds the values of 2019 as early as October 2023.
