Alaska Airlines is preparing to provide first-class passengers with water in a cardboard box instead of the usual plastic bottles. The move is part of the airline's effort to reduce plastic waste on board its aircraft.

Alaska Airlines has announced that it will take part in the American project Boxed Water, which supplies cardboard boxes for water. According to the manufacturing company, the new cardboard boxes for water have a 36% lower carbon footprint, as well as 43% less fossil fuel compared to ordinary plastic glass.

In partnership with Boxed Water, Alaska Airlines will become "one of the first" air carriers to reduce the use of disposable plastic water bottles on board, replacing them with cardboard ones, while aiming to eliminate up to 7.2 millions of plastic bottles every year.

Alaska Airlines will offer cardboard boxes of water instead of the classic plastic bottles.

The boxes will first be offered to Class I passengers who will fly with the airline's De Havilland Canada Dash 8 aircraft, starting May 19, 2020. The company intends to continue the initiative throughout the 2021 summer season.

After setting carbon reduction targets to zero by 2040, as well as waste and water targets for 2025, Alaska Airlines was the first airline to withdraw plastic straws and chopsticks in 2018.
