SWISS is facing structural changes in the market and expects to see a 20% decrease in customer demand in the medium term. However, thanks to a constructive consultation procedure, the corresponding reduction in the workforce by 550 redundancies for operational reasons, including redundancies due to non-acceptance of the modified working conditions, is lower than expected.

In total, SWISS will lay off around 1.700 full-time employees by the end of 2021, with two-thirds of this reduction achieved through voluntary measures and staff turnover. The SWISS aircraft fleet will also be reduced by 15%. SWISS fulfills all its social responsibilities in all these actions and ensures that these unavoidable dismissals, for operational reasons, pay the utmost attention to all social considerations.

Thus, the airline will withdraw five aircraft that it uses for long-haul flights, Airbus A330 or Airbus A340, and another 10 aircraft that it uses for medium and short-haul flights. The carrier said that most of the aircraft used for short-haul flights planned for withdrawal will be those leased from partner Helvetic Airways.

SWISS will lay off 1700 employees by the end of 2021 and reduce its fleet by 15%.

In a statement from the company, SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx said: "I am sorry for all our employees who are being fired and, with the deepest regret, we must take this radical action in response to the structural changes facing our industry. We are convinced, however, that this is the right course to follow if we want to repay our bank loans, regain our ability to invest and maintain our competitive credentials. ”

The current production of SWISS is still substantially below that of pre-pandemic periods. During the summer season, capacity will be - probably - around 50 to 55% of the level reached in 2019. For 2021 as a whole, SWISS expects the shoulder of flights operated to be around 40% of that of 2019.

In May, the airline fired another 780 employees, these dismissals being part of the same restructuring process.
