TAP Air Portugal will suspend its operations completely, with minor exceptions. And for this occasion, for the first time in its history, TAP will suspend flights to Brazil. The decision will take effect immediately and will be valid until May 4, 2020, at least.

The only exceptions will be the repatriation flights and the flights to the Portuguese islands: Madeira (Funchal) and Azores (Lajes and Ponta Delgada).

As of March 20, 2020, TAP Air Portugal has temporarily reduced much of its scheduled flights. He had kept some strategic flights to destinations in North America, South America, Europe, Africa. And in Brazil, I flew to São Paulo x 2 flights / week and to Rio de Janeiro x 1 weekly flight.

But for the first time, from 1960 until now, when direct TAP flights between Portugal and Brazil will be suspended in peacetime. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAP Air Portugal was the main air carrier between Europe and Brazil, with scheduled flights to 10 Brazilian destinations.

Suspension of TAP flights will result in the passing of 9 employees into technical unemployment. They will receive 2/3 of their salary. The remaining 1.000 employees, representing 10% of the workforce of the Portuguese company, will receive only 80% of the salary.

We also mention the following. If Azul Linhas Aéreas suspends the Campinas - Lisbon route, which is operated via Recife, and LATAM cancels its flight on the Lisbon - Guarulhos route, Brazil and Portugal could be left without a direct connection for the first time in history.
