You can get compensation for canceled or delayed charter flights

Charter flights are flights scheduled occasionally at the request of commercial entities such as travel agencies. Charter flights are scheduled, in most cases, for tourist purposes and are sold as a package with other services, for example accommodation. But that doesn't make them any more special than frequent flyers in the face of air passenger rights in Europe.

Every year, especially in the summer season, numerous airports in Romania are connected to holiday destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia or the Middle East by means of charter flights. As with frequent flyers, if you have canceled, delayed or overbooked charter flights, you are entitled to compensation of up to 600 EURO in accordance with EC regulation No. 261/2004.

For example, if you had scheduled a charter flight with animewings, FlyLili, TAROM or with any other airline and it had a delay of more than three hours at the destination or was canceled because of the airline, then you are eligible for financial compensation of up to 600 EURO.

The rights of air passengers

If you fly on EU territory or from the EU to other non-EU destinations (regardless of whether the flight is operated by a company inside or outside the EU), you are also entitled to financial compensation of up to €600. These compensations are set according to the distance:

- 250 Euro for distance flights below 1500 km - regional and domestic flights
- 400 euros for flights between 1500-3500 km
- 600 euros for flights over distances over 3500 km (with a minimum delay of 4 hours)
- 300 euros for flights over distances over 3500 km (delayed between 3 and 4 hours)

These rights have been established by the EU faci fac part din the rights of air traffic passengers (To read). So we are not talking here about territorial laws or laws made by airlines, but about European Union directives. These laws also apply to flights from / to Romania, whether we speak of liner or charter flights.

How you can apply for compensation

With the travel voucher apply for compensation, via email or dedicated electronic forms, as follows:

  • At the tour operator travel agency from which you bought the charter package and ask for the rights;
  • At the airline;
  • To the issuer of the travel insurance policy, if you have opted for full travel insurance (including for canceled flights, baggage, etc.);
  • To a company specializing in air passenger rights, such as AirAdvisor, if you don't want to bother with the travel agency, airline or other channels.
