The Icelandic authorities have decided to amend the current rules on quarantine requirements that are currently imposed on people diagnosed with COVID-19 disease.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health on December 30, the quarantine period for those who are tested positive for the virus will be shortened to seven days.

However, it was emphasized that the authorities would have the right to extend the period of solitary confinement for certain persons if necessary. The extension of the quarantine period will be based on continuous medical evaluation.

Previously, Iceland had a ten-day quarantine requirement for those who tested positive for the new coronavirus. However, according to Iceland Monitor, the Icelandic authorities have begun to consider shortening the period after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that they would shorten the quarantine period to five days for US citizens.

Iceland is one of the European countries that has managed to control the situation of COVID-19 by imposing strict rules for all travelers. However, the number of cases has risen slightly in recent weeks. World Health Organization (WHO) data show that Iceland has registered 3.766 new cases of COVID-19 infection in the last seven days.
