Authorities in Japan have confirmed that they will ban visitors from around the world as fears grow about a new version of Covid-19. The decision comes just weeks after the country lifted entry rules, largely in place since the pandemic broke out last spring. The measure will apply from 30 November.

Omicron, the new variant of the coronavirus, was detected in South Africa last week. In response, Japan has tightened entry restrictions for people arriving from South Africa and eight other countries in the region. At present, guests must be quarantined for ten days in government-designated units. From November 30, tourist trips will be blocked.

Little is known about the new Covid-19 strain. Research is being done to determine if Omicron is more contagious or more dangerous to human health. Vaccine manufacturers are conducting studies to determine how effective they are against the new coronavirus.

However, dozens of countries have rushed to impose restrictions, block flights and close borders.
