Residents of Oradea and the metropolitan area will have a new public transport alternative. The regional authorities plan to develop a network of metropolitan trains. The project is to be submitted for financing through European funds.
new network will connect the Municipality of Oradea, in several directions:
- Oradea – Sânmartin – Băile 1 Mai – Băile Felix, Cordău;
- Oradea – Oradea Airport;
- Oradea – Borș (Industrial Park);
- Oradea – Sântandrei – Girișu de Criș – Toboliu – Cheresig.
The tram-train network project becomes necessary due to the increase in population in Oradea and the metropolitan area and the number of jobs in the municipality, which causes a large flow of commuters.
The tram-train is a means of public transport that can run on both tram lines and train lines. 13 such vehicles would be purchased in the following years.
The project is carried out within a partnership between: Bihor County Council, Oradea City Hall, Oradea Local Transport (OTL), Oradea Metropolitan Area Association (ZMO) and Oradea Local Development Agency (ADLO).
Such a project could also lead to the development of tourism in Oradea and its surroundings. Thus, people could travel from the airport to Oradea much faster, and from Oradea to Băile Felix and other localities in the metropolitan area.
