During a press conference held the other day, Putin announced that he wants Russia to produce 1000 planes by 2030, so that it no longer depends on international manufacturers.

Speaking to a select audience and viewers at home, the Russian leader said the market was currently "overloaded" with planes made by Airbus and Boeing.

"We need to develop our own aircraft production […] and we plan to make more than 1.000 of our own aircraft by 2030Putin said.

According to Russian news publication Tass, Putin plans to produce the Irkut MC-21 and switch to Russian engines for certain existing models.

Russia's aviation industry has struggled to operate efficiently since Western sanctions were imposed after Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine. Russian airlines were unable to legally obtain the Boeing and Airbus parts they needed to keep their aircraft in good condition.

But let's not forget that Russia nationalized hundreds of aircraft belonging to international leasing companies, many of which were used for spare parts. With Western technology, Russia now wants to produce its own aircraft.
