KLM opposes measures to limit passenger numbers announced by Schiphol Airport

Due to the lack of security staff at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, airport management has announced that additional measures will be needed to keep the situation manageable and safe for passengers and staff during the peak summer period (July 6 - August 28). Therefore, Schiphol Airport has decided that the number of passengers, who board daily flights from Amsterdam, should be capped for July and August.

KLM supports the need for additional measures, but at the same time it should be emphasized that the mandatory reduction of the number of passengers on boarding at local level is very harmful and considers that it should be a unique, short-term solution. KLM considers it unacceptable for airport users to have to bear the structural burden of capacity problems at Schiphol.

KLM is against the Schiphol measure

Although KLM is opposed to the Schiphol measure, the Dutch airline cooperated with the airport authorities to resolve the issue in the interests of passengers and airport safety. KLM did so, inter alia, in compliance with Schiphol's requests to cancel flights and to voluntarily slow down ticket sales, distribute flights throughout the day, extend connection times, and so on.

KLM considers it important to provide passengers with clarity as soon as possible about the measures they can expect during the summer. In this situation, it is better to take action now than to take ad hoc action later. Therefore, KLM will respond to the request to reduce the number of passengers embarking locally, thus helping to reduce the pressure on security at Schiphol Airport during the peak summer period.

KLM will do its utmost to ensure that more and more passengers can enjoy the holidays they have already booked. This can be done, among other things, by restricting the number of tickets made available to passengers who board locally during peak hours. This measure would complement KLM's existing efforts, such as spreading flights throughout the day. KLM announces that it will not have to cancel existing bookings. KLM considers that Schiphol Airport is responsible for the financial impact of these measures.
