Following the coup, which took place on February 1, 2021, flights to and from Myanmar were suspended and all airports in the country were closed.
"Reports indicate that all airports in Myanmar are closed. We will look for more information and provide updates as they become available ", said the US Embassy in Myanmar in a post on Twitter.
According to a subsequent embassy message, the road to Yangon International Airport, Myanmar's largest city, was also closed. In addition, the US Embassy advised all US citizens in the country to avoid any travel that is not a necessity.
On 1 February 2021, in a notice (NOTAM), all pilots were instructed not to fly to Myanmar and not to leave without permission. All flights have been suspended and airports are closed until May 31, 2021, The Myanmar Times reported.
The flight to and from Myanmar was suspended after the country's army took power and detained democratically elected leaders. The new government has declared a state of emergency for a year, until new elections are held.
Prior to the coup, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Myanmar Ministry of Transport and Communications extended the suspension of international flights until the end of January 2021.
