Airbus A320 (N106US) aircraft, aged 9.5, took off at 15: 25 on the 4 runway of La Guardia International Airport. At 2 minutes after takeoff, as it climbed over 3700 ft, the plane hit a flock of Canadian geese.
As a result of the collision with the birds, both engines suffered damage and lost traction power. The captain Chesley Sullenberger (Sully) and Jeffrey Skiles (First Officer) informed the incident control tower, declaring a state of emergency. In the first phase, they tried to get the aircraft back to ground at La Guardia International Airport.
Commander Sully was recognized as a hero
During the return maneuver, Sully & Skiles realized that they no longer had the altitude necessary to reach the airport. The air traffic controller said it could try an emergency landing at Teterboro.
This was the moment when Commander Sully made the famous call "We will not succeed. We will land in the Hudson!". Sully flew to the Hudson River and made an almost perfect landing in the icy water. The aircraft remained completely intact on impact with the river surface.
Everyone on board, 150 passengers and 5 crew members, escaped. They managed to get off the plane before it sank in the Hudson. Rescue crews were recovered in time.
The fact that the modern Airbus A320 aircraft remained intact, and the 155 of people on board escaped alive, is known as the "Miracle on the Hudson."
The plane was recovered from the Hudson River and can be admired at the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After this incident, a film was also made. Sully appeared in 2016 and presents the life of Commander Sully after the incident, when he was dragged through the courts. He managed to prove that he made the best decision.
