The aircraft landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, United Airlines' main hub of operations, coming from Memphis, Tennessee. At the time of landing, visibility was low and there was fog and rain.
With registration number N27290, the plane lost its landing gear after leaving the runway, according to initial reports. In images circulating on social media, passengers can be seen disembarking via an external staircase, past the aircraft banked to the right, stopped in the grass near the end of the runway.
