The newest airport inaugurated in Romania and the only one built from scratch in the last 30 years has big plans for the future. We are talking here about Brașov Ghimbav International Airport. Airport representatives stated that Brașov Airport wants to reach 80.000 passengers by the end of this year, and 2026 passengers in 420.000, it announces brasov.net. But the airport management also has some fears about the evolution of the airport.

Brașov Airport aims for over 420 passengers per year in 000

Brașov Airport wants to reach 80.000 passengers by the end of this year, and 2026 passengers in 420.000. Airport management fears the most that the schedule could remain reduced.

Brașov Ghimbav International Airport has made a plan of objectives until 2026 in terms of the number of passengers, so that it can reach these targets. Thus, this year 80.000 passengers would be boarded and disembarked, while next year the figure should reach 150.000, reports adevarul.ro.

Doubling passenger traffic in 2024

The jump next year might seem big at first glance, as from 80.000 to 150.000 is almost double. Let's not forget, however, that the airport was opened this year on June 15., which will mean it will only operate for 6 full months in 2023, and in 2024 it would be normal for the traffic to double, at least.

Instead, in 2025, the desired jump is an obvious one, with the number of passengers having to reach 270.000. And in the following year, 2026, a very large increase is expected, up to 420.000 travelers.

In this situation, the airport's income will also increase. According to its management, revenue growth will be 5% every year. Moreover, in these years, the amounts offered by the local authorities as a subsidy will be reduced by the same percentage of 5% per year.

In order to reach the target number of passengers, several important works are foreseen in the development plan, including increasing the number of aircraft parking spaces by widening the platform, a photovoltaic part and many others. But the main fear would be that the airport could stick to its current schedule.

It remains to be seen if these traffic targets can be reached. It is not only the operating hours that matter, but also all other services and benefits for airlines and passengers. In order for the number of passengers to increase, Brașov airport must attract new air operators to open competitive routes.

Currently, Dan Air and Wizz Air are the only airlines that have frequent flights to a number of European destinations. FlyLili will fly from Brașov starting December 2023.

What do you think? Will Brașov Airport reach the threshold of 420 passengers in 000?
