RYANAIR has announced that it is closing its base at Athens Airport from 29 October to 25 March 2022. The reason RYANAIR has taken this decision is due to financial compensation. Airports managed by Fraport do not offer subsidies / financial incentives to airlines to operate flights in the winter season.

RYANAIR director Eddie Wilson noted that the Greek authorities do not support airlines in the long term and do not want to support the development of air operations throughout the year. Plus the administrator Fraport, which manages most of the Greek airports, does not intend to lower prices to stimulate air traffic.

While other governments have taken measures to recover air traffic and revive tourism, according to RYANAIR, the Greek government still applies the highest airport taxes, which makes RYANAIR's presence at Greek airports no longer of interest.
